Inside Markarth

Markarth is a major city located in the Reach, near the border of High Rock.

It is housed in an ancient Dwemer city, giving it architecture noticeably different from most cities in Skyrim. Much of the city is carved into the rock face which surrounds it. Jarl Igmund is the ruler of the Reach. He is having issues with a group known as the Forsworn. Though there are many races populating the city, the people of Markarth are not fond of outsiders and the guards treat them with hostility and suspicion. Half the city is owned by the Silver-Blood family. The Silver-Bloods also own Cidhna Mine, which is actually inside the city walls and used as a prison, said to be the most secure prison in Skyrim. There is an area dug into the cliff called The Warrens where most of the poor of Markarth live in extreme poverty. Many of the workers in the Warrens work in the mines and at the smelters in the area. The guards are quartered in a Dwemer dormitory carved out of the stone beneath the imposing Guard Tower at the center of the city.

The Silver-Blood Inn near the entrance to the city is a good place for brawling, picking up bounty letters, hiring a follower, or renting a room. There are several shops in an open-air marketplace nearby. Markarth also houses Understone Keep, an ancient Dwemer castle carved deep into the mountain, which can be accessed by walking through the guarded door at the top of the main path through town (it will be discovered as a separate location). The surrounding area is rich in minerals and ores, but be careful of Forsworn members. They infest the surrounding countryside and will attack on sight.

Map[edit]

  • Each white dot (or pog) corresponds directly to a door. All doors are numbered and relate to a Key on the side of the map.

Notes[edit]

  • Evidence of the former Dwemer presence in Markarth is found in the deserted ruins of a Dwemer city. The ruins still contain several operational (and hostile) Dwemer machines.
  • Markarth is a unique city in that a great many citizens may get killed depending on the choices that you make during quests, making the phrase that only 'Blood and Silver' runs through Markarth true. See the notes to the table of NPCs above for details.
  • Markarth previously appeared in Arena as Markarth Side, and reappears in ESO.

Bugs[edit]

  • There is a dialogue glitch with Markarth guards that occurs after the two Forsworn quests. They will attempt to arrest you, and if you reply with any option other than resist arrest, the dialogue will repeat endlessly. ?
    • The simplest way of resolving this is to go back to the Temple of Talos and speak with the guards inside. Choose the option to go to jail, then walk outside and speak to another guard to pay your bounty, persuade, etc. successfully.
    • For various other methods on how to resolve this, see the talk page.
  • The steward Raerek may refuse to speak with you, or will not offer to sell you Vlindrel Hall. See this section for details. ?

The front door opens to a spacious, multipurpose room. A shelving unit just to the right of the front door holds a Potion of True Shot and a sabre cat pelt, as well as some wine and alto wine. Right next to the cupboard is an unlocked chest containing leveled items. A selection of iron weaponry and a hunting bow is displayed on the adjacent table, together with more wine and alto wine. However, any of these items may become dislodged during the first stages of the related quest, and subsequently found on the floor nearby. The nearby dresser is a safe storage option, but contains only clothes. A mace is sitting on top.

Garageband for mac 10.6 8 download. The other side of the room serves as a kitchen and dining area. While the spit over the fire is not usable, plenty of foodstuffs can be found in this area, both on the table and scattered on the floor. A basket with two cabbages is by the front door. A small round table around the corner holds a bottle of wine, a bottle of alto wine, and a loaf of bread. A dried elves ear, two garlic braids, and a dried frost mirriam are hanging to the left of the fire, with a woodcutter's axe on a pile of wood below. To the right of the fireplace are two rabbits and a pheasant, along with an eidar cheese wedge, a sliced eidar cheese, and another cabbage. The cupboard to the right holds only tableware and a troll skull, but is a safe storage option. The table is laden with food: two potatoes, a baked potato, a serving of grilled leeks, a raw rabbit leg, a pheasant breast, a salmon steak, a seared slaughterfish steak, a goat cheese wheel, a sliced goat cheese, a goat cheese wedge, a sliced eidar cheese, an eidar cheese wedge, two loaves and a piece of bread, two bottles of alto wine, and a bottle of wine. A second unlocked chest by the table contains leveled items. The end table has clutter, but is another safe storage option.

The second room is furnished with a usable bed. A hidden chest containing leveled items is tucked underneath the foot of the bed. More safe storage options are in the bedroom, including the end table by the bed and the dresser across from the bed. A bottle of wine is on the end table, and a bottle of alto wine and a cheap book are on the dresser. The cupboard is also safe, and holds a potion of minor healing, an iron sword, and a sabre cat pelt. A copy of Boethiah's Proving may be found under the cupboard. An unlocked chest by the doorway to the next room contains leveled items.

The next room and lower levels of the house are used mostly for storage. A small coin purse, clutched by a skeletal arm, is on the pillar at the foot of the stairs. To the left is a shelving unit containing clutter, a bottle of wine, a bottle of alto wine, and two loaves of bread. Two rabbits, a pheasant, a dried elves ear, and a garlic braid hang straight ahead on the west wall, near another potato and a gourd on a barrel. To the right is a wall shelf with some sacks, a loaf of bread, and a goat cheese wheel. In the northeast corner is a cupboard containing clutter and two potatoes. Next to the cupboard is a wall shelf with more sacks. The furniture is safe storage, but contains nothing of interest. Before the next room is a small area with a wall shelf containing clutter, more sacks, and a barrel, with a pickaxe on the floor.

The next room down contains a desk ahead with a bottle of wine, a bottle of Nord mead, and a barrel containing more Nord mead. To the left are four more barrels, three of which contain more Nord mead. There is a shelving unit to the left of the barrels containing clutter, some sacks, two bottles of alto wine, and two bottles of wine. In the remaining half of the room are four more shelving units containing clutter, sacks, another bottle of alto wine, and another pickaxe, with five more barrels nearby, three containing Nord mead. When exploring the room, you will notice a draft coming from the south. Following this leads you to a tunnel heading down. The tunnel winds through some Dwemer ruins to the shrine of Molag Bal. The only item of slight interest in the tunnel is another pickaxe.

Notes[edit]

  • The house can be used as free player housing, as items will not disappear from the containers.
  • There are no cooking, alchemy, or enchanting facilities, but the house has the largest amount of storage containers in the game, with 62 in total.
  • The poltergeist effect that triggers as part of the House of Horrors can be avoided in order to keep the house tidy. If Vigilant Tyranus is killed before the effect starts, it will never occur, and all furniture will remain positioned normally, while the quest will proceed without problems.
  • The poltergeist effect causes the chairs in the entrance room to become rearranged atop the table. If this happens and you prefer the old arrangement, the chairs can be reset by activating the console and typing prid c2527 followed by disable.
  • A copy of the book Boethiah's Proving can be found under a cupboard in the second room after you reach level 30, leading to another Daedric quest.
  • There is an 'Empty' shadowmark at the bottom left of the entrance door.
  • The house is referred to as Logrolf's House in the Creation Kit.
  • The house is occupied by seemingly normal people in The Elder Scrolls Online: Markarth. The altar to Molag Bal didn't yet exist at that time.
